Tracks and scats of wildcats cannot be clearly distinguished in the field from those of domestic cats. There are attempts to train dogs for the identification of wildcat scats. Wildcats can also not be identified in the field from kills. The majority of their prey, e.g. mice, is small enough to be consumed completely, and for larger prey there are no studies regarding the distinctive marks particular to a wildcat kill.
