Abundance

Switzerland

The last rough estimate of the wildcat abundance in Switzerland was done in 2020. It estimated the wildcat population in Switzerland at ca. 1’100 individuals (DE, FR). In our wildcat project, we estimated a density of 26 (17–36) individuals per 100 km² suitable habitat in the northern Jura mountains.

Europe

So far, there only scattered and relatively broad estimates on population abundances of European wildcats. The estimates and information used for the IUCN Red List assessment in 2015 have different ages and are presented in the table below. Sometimes newer estimates are available since then. These are written in Italics. Additionally, there are some density estimates from different countries and regions.
