The Brown Bear
Early in the 20th century the brown bear was eradicated from Switzerland. In the nearby Trentino region of Italy, about 50 km south of the Swiss National Park, a project to reintroduce the brown bear began in 1999 and its success ensures a natural migration of brown bears into Switzerland. In July 2005 the first brown bear in 150 years was observed in the Lower Engadine. Every year since then individual bears have entered the region of the Swiss National Park in the Grisons.
